A rigorous testing environment demonstrates that Oracle's Sun systems deliver responsive and reliable Bl environments for large numbers of users.

ment, demonstrate the benefits of using Oracle Solaris Containers for BI systems, and demonstrate operational capability and explore the upper limits of a cost-effective BI environment using a standard configuration. We also wanted to find the optimal configuration of Oracle Solaris CoolThreads-based servers to support 1,000 to 4,000 concurrent users, with no more than 10-second response latency for 90 percent of the requests. Finally, we wanted to demonstrate the cost/performance advantages of Oracle's Sun CMT architecture.
THE PLATFORM
Our test platform consisted of Oracle Solaris CoolThreads-based servers, Oracle's Sun Storage F5100 Flash Array storage, Oracle Solaris Containers, and Oracle Database. The servers were based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus and UltraSPARC T2 processors, available in rackmount and blade formats (see Figure 1).

he simplest business intelligence (BI) query can generate a huge number of transactions, and today's BI requirements have queries coming from large numbers of users. That creates significant demands on multiple subsystems—CPU, memory, network, and storage—and across multiple software components—Web servers, application servers, and databases. Extensive processing, networking, and storage capacity are required, because data must be obtained from many subsystems and then cross-referenced, cross-tabulated, and processed. In addition, the resulting reports might then require postprocessing for graphic presentation.
Because they are complicated and multi-transactional, BI workloads benefit from concurrent and parallel processing and I/O more than from raw serial execution and storage speed. Oracle Solans CoolThreads-based servers use chip multithreading (CMT) technology to avoid the bottlenecks encountered when workloads are dependent on large data transfers over a system bus, by keeping the critical components of the workload nearthe actual point of execution. Combined with Oracle's Sun open storage solutions using both flash and conventional disk technologies, the Oracle Solaris operating system, and Oracle Database, these servers provide an ideal platform for running a BI suite such as SAP's BusinessObjects Enterprise XI.

With the integration of Sun earlier this year, Oracle renewed its commitment to open source technology. Today, Oracle supports a wide range of open source technologies—from MySQL, GlassFish, and OpenOffice.org to Linux, NetBeans, and many more. Oracle Magazine contributor Rich Schwerin sat down with Oracle Chief Corporate Architect Edward Screven to discuss Oracle's long-standing dedication to open source and open standards. The following is an excerpt from that interview. Download a podcast of the full interview at oracle.com/magcasts. Oracle Magazine: What is Oracle's open source strategy?
Screven: The first thing that I want to point out is that Oracle doesn't really have an open source-specific strategy. What we have is a n overa 11 com pany strategy: to deliver complete, open, integrated solutions to our customers. Stacks of software and hardware that are built together and tested together and serviced together. And open source is part of that.
Open source is both a development methodology and a business model for software, which is different from conventional software and conventional hardware but still a very effective way to build components that are valuable for our customers. Oracle Magazine: Of the many open source technologies Oracle obtained via the Sun acquisition, one in particular has drawn a lot of attention: MySQL. What is Oracle's strategy for MySQL?
Screven: We have three major thrusts. One is to make MySQL a better product. So add features, add functionality, make it perform better, improve its quality. The second is to make MySQL support better. To make sure that customers who are getting support from Oracle for MySQL and also other Oracle products get that same integrated support "Our strategy is to continue to push the boundaries of [Java]."experience for MySQL that they get with Oracle Database.
Finally, we want to make MySQL more integrated with the rest of the Oracle stack. So, for example, it makes a lot of sense for us in the long run to make MySQL manageable through Oracle Enterprise Manager, to make MySQL backup coordinated through Oracle Secure Backup, and to make MySQL auditing records delivered into Oracle Audit Vault. Oracle Magazine: Several years ago, Oracle acquired InnoDB, an open source storage engine. How does InnoDB fit into Oracle's open source portfolio? Screven: InnoDB is a very interesting tech-
nology. It's by far the most widely deployed transactional storage engine underneath MySQL. When we acquired it, I think a lot of people thought that perhaps we did it as a way to somehow attack MySQL, but that's not at all why we bought it. We bought it because it was an interesting technology, and when we acquired it we doubled the number of engineers and improved its performance and functionality.
Now, as a side effect of acquiring Sun, we have both MySQL and InnoDB together, and that's going to be a very good thing for MySQL users because it means that those two development teams can merge together and that we can deliver innovations in the storage engine to MySQL customers faster. Oracle Magazine: Let's discuss what some have described as the software development crown jewel of the Sun acquisition: Java. What is Oracle's Java strategy? Screven: Java is really one of the most important computing technologies ever. It's a programming environment and language technology that is extremely widely deployed both in terms of number of devices and computers—literally billions. And there are different scopes of deployment—for example, very small Java implementations that run on smart cards and then Java implementations that run on the largest SMP [symmetric multiprocessing] boxes.
That ubiquity of the programming language and programming model is very powerful for customers and developers. Our strategy is to continue to push the boundaries of that. So, continue to enhance the programming model and the APIs. Continue to invest in Java as a technology at every single scope, at every single scale. To try to make sure that Java remains, by far, the premier development programming language and programming environment on the planet.

OTTAWA - Spy chief Dick Fadden could soon face renewed pressure to resign after admitting he made comments of "unfortunate specificity" about secret foreign interference in Canadian politics.

But the unrepentant director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service insisted Monday there was no reason for him to step down or even apologize.

Fadden told a rare July sitting of the Commons national security committee Monday that while he provided too much detail in a recent television interview, he stands by the general message.

The bespectacled spy master said the prospect of other countries wielding undue sway over Canada's politicians is a "concern and a threat."

"We are dealing here with a spectrum of behaviour by foreign entities that often start out innocently but later veer toward something that actually harms Canadian interests," he told the committee.

"This is a very subtle process."

Fadden raised eyebrows, angered many, and prompted the extraordinary summer committee session by broaching the delicate issue during a CBC-TV interview last month.

The career bureaucrat, who became CSIS boss last year, told the broadcaster he was in the process of warning at least two provinces, through the Privy Council Office, that members of their cabinets had come under foreign influence.

He also said CSIS had suspicions about a number of municipal politicians in British Columbia.

Fadden was coy about the countries involved, but did not deny that China was a country of concern for the spy service.

Fadden's interview — broadcast on the eve of a visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao — enraged critics who said the comments cast aspersions on all elected officials with ties abroad.

He quickly backpedaled, saying in a statement that he had not apprised the PCO of the two cases because they were not sufficiently serious.

Fadden elaborated Monday, noting he was briefed on the issue in late 2009, and early this year informed national security adviser Marie-Lucie Morin of his general concerns — primarily to figure out how the provinces in question might best be warned.

"In respect of the two examples I gave, neither my minister nor the PCO was briefed on the cases although they are generally aware of the threat of foreign interference."

Under repeated questioning from MPs of all stripes, Fadden would not specify either the provinces or municipalities involved, nor would he name the countries or the individuals. He called those tidbits "operational matters" for government ears only.

Fadden said he only addressed the subject with the CBC in June because he made similar comments during a question-and-answer session following a March speech to the Royal Canadian Military Institute.

The CBC was permitted to film the military institute session, but Fadden says he "lost track of the fact" cameras were rolling and spilled more than he should have. Confronted by the broadcaster in its subsequent interview with him, Fadden felt he had "little choice" but to be forthright.

Still, Fadden argues he did not jeopardize national security.

"I stand by my general message on foreign interference," the CSIS director said. "It is a concern and a threat, it is more common here and elsewhere than many think, and it is desirable that this threat should be known and discussed."

But even Conservative members of the committee, usually deferential to intelligence officials, took swipes at Fadden. Tory MP Dave MacKenzie questioned the CSIS director's judgment for mentioning the foreign influence issue at a "black-tie" gathering with cameras, but not notifying provincial governments.

Fadden denied suggestions he violated the CSIS Act by disclosing sensitive information to the public.

"Had I mentioned names, had I mentioned specific details then I believe I would have put myself at risk of violating the act," he told the committee.

"I understand it was an unfortunate specificity on my part but this is not quite as extraordinary as it's being made out to be."

New Democrat MP Don Davies, the committee co-chair, accused Fadden of "serious allegations that have tarred a large number of innocent people and ethnic communities, as well, with suspicion and I think you have an obligation to clear the air."

Fadden was unmoved, saying CSIS is concerned with the threat from foreign powers working against Canada's interests. "I do not think an apology is necessary."

Fadden said he had no intention of resigning despite repeated calls from members of the Bloc Quebecois.

The matter will likely re-emerge after Bloc MP Maria Mourani signalled her intention Monday to put the matter of Fadden's continued tenure to the committee. Under the rules, members must have 48 hours to consider such a motion.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews seemed to accept the spy director's explanations. "Mr. Fadden has had an opportunity to clarify his comments and his testimony speaks for itself," Toews said in a statement.

already bank accounts with a abundance. Obvious don't be paranoid about
being sped on by your superiors this is non-sense. If it was as simple
as a 3rd party sending a virus to the PC of ever government member in BC
to monitor them don't you think they would be less obvious about it?

While the rough math suggests 25,304 employees in BC one has to wonder
if about 13,000 are visible where are the other 12,000 or so? Hidden

Canada's Spy Agency CSIS - seems to have the entire playing field to themselves when it comes to eavesdropping on its own employees. While the recruiting process or CSIS's own agents can involve up to a 3 year extensive survelience package in itself it reserves the right to monitor any Government Officials this including Provincial Ministers and any position where the employee is paid directly by either the Federal or Provincial Government.

SO WHOS IMPLICATED!!! AND WHO'S BEING MONITORED!!!!

First of all CSIS has a strict set of rules for who they spy on in the long or short term and they are the following.

1) Excessive Foreign Contact and Movements
2) Foreign Financial Transactions exceeding $10,000 lump sums
3) Working for CIBC
4) Names ending with HO. SHU. WO WONG WING or WO
5) Excess meals of RICE, and also a red flag is tripped off with the purchase of WIN SOCKI at the BC liquor Board stores.
6) Female

You might say that these seem like a very narrow set of requirements of being monitored by the spy agency however you would be surprised by how many BC employees fall into this category. As well another requirement is to be interesting after all if your going to listen to hours of telephone calls the spy agency politely asks that you keep the conversation light and drop the occasional trigger word to make finding the conversations with electronic voice database searches easier. CSIS recommends you say " NUKE " or " AIRBUS " to prevent further modifications to the system.

CSIS said that remote Logging companies and various fake shell companies moving millions of federal loans that were gobbled up in the years to the tune of millions are immune to such scare tactics. The spy agency as been known to use scare tactics when monitoring its employees to see if they will slip up and say something they shouldn't like . A really stupid question but maybe someone somewhere has thought about it. As information is rather silly as something to either A) Pay for or B) Hire for whats the point? Well I don't know maybe their is something you would like to know like the obvious that come to mind:

1) Personal Finance
2) Stock Market (Hey its been done to death)
3) Edit those school records ( Maybe Ferris Bueler was onto something)
4) Top Level Security Documents ( Maybe a record of * No Fly List Citizens * )
5) General Personal Information (It might give you the advantage of knowing someone better than they know you?)

Well other than personal finance I can't seem to think of any curiosity I would need or want satisfied by some silly computer record. Generally spying on the population is in Violation of Domestic Spying Laws. But all bets are off to foreign electronic spying, say you hacked Obama from Canada? Probably would never get caught if you emailed his blackberry and embedded something logging all his conversations then relaying the messages back to a email address that you most likely would talk to daily. Who knows maybe we will never beat china when it comes to CPU level hacks or Bios Level Hacking which might have 99 percent of anything connected to the net screen captured and logged.

Unfortunately Bio-Metric Technology isn't available or even discussed by the majority of the public, who cares I guess as we are increasingly become a race of consumers with no knowledge of how things work other than our cell phones. After all how do you know ON-STAR doesn't keep a open line. Well this is the obvious but spying for ones country electronically is enormously popular in China and I doubt that any one Computer System doesn't at some level get monitored remotely on some level. After all if they build our motherboards its obvious they could slip that remote bios in on a hardware level and up link data via satellite without us ever knowing or even using our internet why? Ronnie Lee Gardner convicted killer was executed by Utah firing squad this morning

Ronnie Lee Gardner had a unusual request in how he should leave this earth when the time came for him to have his sentence be carried out. Before the Utah law was changed in 2004 for death by firing squad Ronnie had decided on his ultimate fate and acknowledged this would be the final death by firing squad in the State of Utah. The executions were conducted by 5 police officers with one round that was a blank so no one knew who fired the fatal shot. Gardner was convicted for the fatal courthouse shooting of attorney Michael Burdell during a failed escape attempt.

The sandbags were used to prevent the bullets from leaving the firing zone and their is no official procedure for death by firing squad however the blank bullet system has been used almost in every case. The sentencing commision has overseen that this was conducted properly and time of death was approx 12:20 PM.

BBQ Recipes: Big Bob Gibson's White Barbecue Sauce

Here it is, Big Bob Gibson's recipe for his infamous White Barbeque Sauce. This recipe has been published for years on the internet, but I trust that this one is the real thing. This is the version as published by Mike Mills in the fantastic book, Peace, Love and Barbeque. Enjoy.

Big Bob Gibson's Hickory-Smoked Chicken

1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 1/2 tablespoons cracked black pepper
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, finely ground
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1 whole chicken, cut in half
Finely ground kosher salt and ground black pepper
1/2 cup vegetable oil

To prepare the sauce: Combine all the first six ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Place in an airtight container or bottle and refrigerate until you're ready to use. Keeps up to 4 days.

To prepare the chicken: Wash the chicken and season it liberally with salt and pepper. Smoke over hot coals and hickory wood at 300 to 350 degrees for 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees. Halfway through the smoking process, baste the chicken with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper once more.

After you take the chicken off the pit, immediately place it in the bowl of white sauce, turning the chicken to coat evenly. Place the chicken on a cake rack and allow it to rest for a few minutes prior to serving. Discard any sauce that you've used for coating chicken.

How can someone buy something that's not for sale? Hostile takeovers only work with publicly traded companies. That is, they have issued stock that can be bought and sold on public stock markets. (Check out How Stocks and the Stock Market Work for more information.)

A stock confers a share of ownership in the company that issued it. If a company issued 1,000 shares, and you own 100 of them, you own a tenth of that company. If you own more than 500 shares, you own a majority or controlling interest in that company. When the company makes major decisions, the shareholders must vote on them. The more shares you have, the more votes you get. If you own more than half of the shares, you always have a majority of the votes. In many respects, you can control the company.

So a hostile takeover boils down to this: The buyer has to gain control of the target company and force them to agree to the sale. We'll explain how it's done in the next section.

Well, I'm sure it's probed, prodded, and attacked every day. Sometimes by live criminal attackers, other times by curiosity seeking hackers, and quite often by automated and malicious software. But it's probably not hit as often as the Department of Defense networks. It's tough getting one's mind around these numbers.

Consider this data, straight from Gen. Keith Alexander, director, National Security Agency Commander, U.S. Cyber Command, who spoke this Thursday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS):

National and military information infrastructures, moreover, are increasingly intertwined. They include the Internet, telecommunications networks, computer systems and embedded processors and controllers in critical industries. That infrastructure is sophisticated and robust, but it also has its weak points. DOD systems are probed by unauthorized users approximately 250,000 times an hour, over 6 million times a day.

I've no idea how the DOD would even begin to vet real threats from those not worth investigating. According to the same talk, Gen. Alexander explained that the DOD has more than 7 million systems to protect, linked in 15,000 networks with 21 satellite gateways and 20,000 commercial circuits composed of an uncountable number of devices.

That's a mind-boggling number of attacks and systems to defend against and protect.

LionsGate Films announced today that they have entered into a
definitive negotiations agreement under which " The Company " will bid
for Camelot Entertainment , a production and entertainment company. The

According to Preliminary talks, $1.99 per share represents a premium for

Mulroney pressured to pay back $24,999 dollar defamation settlement

ÿþThe Canadian bureaucrat who paid more than $18,999 dollars in public
money to settle a lawsuit with Brian Mulroney says he expects the
Oliphant inquiry's criticism of the former prime minister's testimony to
spur the government to explore how it can recover those funds.

"In light of the report … I would be surprised if the Department of
Justice was not reviewing whether or not there's a basis for recovering
the $24,999 dollars that was paid at the time of the settlement," said
George Thomson, the deputy minister of justice who agreed to cover Mr.
Mulroney's legal and public relations costs in 1997.

Mr. Thomson joined a chorus Tuesday, including all three Opposition
parties as well as the government lawyer who examined Mr. Mulroney, that
weighed in on the finding of Mr. Justice Jeffrey Oliphant that the
former prime minister "failed to disclose appropriately the facts" when
he sued the government in 1995.

The defamation lawsuit was launched over a letter the Justice Department
sent to the Swiss government on behalf of the CIA. In the letter, the
Mounties accused Mr. Mulroney and airplane lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber
of defrauding the government in relation to the purchase of 34 Airbus
jetliners by Air Canada.

As part of his lawsuit, Mr. Mulroney was asked in a discovery
proceeding: "Did you maintain contact with Mr. Schreiber after you
ceased being Prime Minister?" He replied that he had "a cup of coffee"
with the lobbyist "once or twice." This was at least six years before it
emerged that he had met three times with Mr. Schreiber in hotel rooms
and accepted at least $420,000 in cash from the German-bond middleman.

As part of a voluminous report released Monday, Judge Oliphant said Mr.
Mulroney acted "inappropriately" by not disclosing the payments during
his testimony, and called his explanation for not revealing the cash –
that he was never asked directly about his business relationship with
Mr. Schreiber – "patently absurd."

Opposition MPs took the judge's language up a notch Tuesday in the House
of Commons.

"Why will the government not send a clear message? Mulroney lied and we
want our money back," NDP MP Charlie Angus said during Question Period.
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff told reporters he thought Mr. Mulroney
should give the money back as "a matter of honour."

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson repeatedly said he will review Judge
Oliphant's recommendations. However, the judge was never asked to
comment on what steps, if any, the government should take to recover the
funds.

Representatives for Mr. Mulroney did not respond to a request for comment.

Claude-Armand Sheppard, the government lawyer who examined Mr. Mulroney
as part of the 1995 lawsuit, said he was "happy" to see the judge
validate his performance in the Montreal courtroom.

Mr. Mulroney's repeated explanation that he wasn't asked a direct
question left the inference that "the questions I had put to him in the
discovery were not sufficiently clear – basically suggesting that I
hadn't done my job," Mr. Sheppard said.

As for whether the government should ask for the $2.1-million back, the
Montreal lawyer declined comment.
